Sirens Women’s Water Polo Team Completes Clean Sweep with BOV Knockout Victory

The Sirens Women’s Water Polo Team has completed a historic clean sweep of all domestic titles this season, capping off their remarkable campaign with a 17-14 victory over San Giljan in the BOV Women’s Knockout Final.

Sirens took an early lead in a high-paced encounter, with Kaia Agius opening the score from a 6-metre shot. Thea Abdilla quickly equalized for San Giljan, but Agius struck again in the 4th minute to restore Sirens’ advantage. Chloe Amato extended the lead to 3-1 with 3:30 left in the first session. A clever lob by Kendra Navarro and a powerful finish from Margarita Plevritou pushed Sirens ahead 5-1. San Giljan responded through Abby Bonello and Elise Gatt, closing the first session at 5-3 in favor of the northerners.

In the second session, Denise Micallef and Agius made it 7-3 for Sirens. Gatt pulled one back for San Giljan, but Sirens surged ahead with goals from Amato, Micallef, and Martha Perici Ferrante, making it 10-4. Ella Miceli added one for the Saints, but further goals from Micallef and Elena Borg closed the half at 11-6.

San Giljan mounted a fierce comeback in the third session. Borg and Bonello narrowed the gap, and a brilliant hat-trick from Profokieva, including two penalties, leveled the score at 11-11. Captain Maia Bonello then gave San Giljan their first lead of the match. However, Sirens captain Micallef responded to end the session at 12-12.

The final session saw Sirens reclaim control. Agius and Plevritou scored early to make it 14-12. Profokieva kept San Giljan in the game, but Sirens pulled away again with goals from Zaira Bartolo and Agius. Gatt added one more for San Giljan, but Agius sealed the win with a decisive strike just six seconds from time.

Having already secured the BOV Winter League and the BOV Summer Championship, Sirens entered the Knockout Final with one goal: to make it a perfect season. They did just that in front by delivering another brilliant performance against the Saints. This dominance of local women’s water polo was made even more special as it came during the 100th Anniversary of the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta, a milestone year for Maltese aquatic sports.

The team received the Knockout Trophy from Stefan Abela, Manager CSR at Bank of Valletta and Karl Izzo, President of the ASA. This trophy now joins the others in Sirens’ cabinet, symbolizing a season of unmatched excellence.

Bank of Valletta’s enduring partnership with the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta has been instrumental in the growth and success of aquatic disciplines across the country. As the ASA celebrates its 100th anniversary, BOV’s continued investment stands as a testament to its commitment to Maltese sport. This collaboration not only nurtures future generations of athletes but also reinforces national pride and community spirit through the celebration of sporting excellence.
