Sirens Women’s Water Polo Team Clinches Historic Fifth Consecutive BOV Championship Title
The Sirens Women’s Water Polo Team has once again etched its name in the history books by securing the BOV Water Polo Championship title for the fifth year in a row.
Trailing long-time rivals Sliema by four points in the BOV Centenary Championship heading into the final week, Sirens needed nothing short of a miracle to retain their crown. That miracle came in the form of a stunning comeback in their march against long-time rivals Sliema. Down 9-5 at the end of the third session, Sirens displayed extraordinary resilience and determination, rallying to a 10-9 victory at the buzzer.
Sirens capped off the week with another dramatic victory over San Giljan. San Giljan started out strongly taking and early 2-1 lead and leading all the way into the third session of the game where Sirens finally levelled the game at 7-7. They then went ahead 9-7 thanks to 2 goals by Kendra Navarro. San Giljan’s Profokieva narrowed the deficit to 9-8 with Margarita Plevritou scoring the last goal of the third session for Sirens to close it 10-8.
Goals by Plevritou and Martha Perici Ferrante extended Sirens’ advantage in the fourth session with Elena Borg pulling one back for San Giljan to make the score 12-9. Kendra Navarro again gave Sirens a 4-goal lead with 3:23 remaining on the clock. Sirens proceeded to control the game and sealing the championship on the 100th Anniversary of the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta. They are on course to complete a clean sweep of all domestic titles this season having already won the BOV Winter League earlier this year and will face off against San Giljan in the final of the BOV Women’s knockout early next week.
The championship win was celebrated in style, with Charles Azzopardi, Head CSR at Bank of Valletta, and Karl Izzo, President of the ASA and Women’s Water Polo co-ordinator Caroline Schiavone presenting a one-of-a-kind commemorative trophy to the newly crowned champions. Commissioned by Bank of Valletta to mark the ASA’s centenary, the trophy will now take pride of place in Sirens’ trophy cabinet.
