San Giljan return to winning ways in BOV Water Polo Winter League

San Giljan returned to winning ways and won the BOV Water Polo Winter League, retaining the last major title they won last year.

Missing out on the major Summer competitions in 2024, the Saints have regrouped and held off Sliema, winners of the Enemed Cup earlier this year to win the BOV Winter League with a 6 point advantage over the Blues.

With just 3 points separating the two teams going into the last game of the season, San Giljan needed at least a draw to securre the title.

Following a balanced first half where San Giljan went into the break with a 6-5 advantage, they turned up the intensity in the third quarter to go 10-6 up. Sliema made up the deficit to go 11 each with 3 minutes to go, with San Giljan losing captain Matthew Zammit and the game ending 12 each and went to the penalty shootout with San Giljan knowing they were already champions having obtained the point from the draw, and then winning it with a 16-14 scoreline, to securing the title and the needed morale booster going into the Summer championship.

Ernest Agius, Chief Operations Officer at Bank of Valletta, accompanied by Karl Izzo, President of the Aquatic Sports Association presented the BOV Water Polo Winter League Trophy to San Giljan in front of the sizable crowd of loyal San Giljan fans at the National Pool in Tal-Qroqq.

Water Polo combines the Maltese people’s love for water and competitive sports, and Bank of Valletta is proud to support one of Malta’s favourite sporting disciplines through its long-term collaboration with the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta.
