Make your interview a success

You managed to secure an interview for a position you want? Great, time to nail it! This is your time to shine, express yourself and pave the career path you want. Simple tips can make a big difference.

Research the company

Prep work is very important. Visit the company’s online channels and learn about its products and services, values, culture and achievements. It’s like getting to know a friend. Demonstrate genuine interest and discover as much as possible about your potential employer.

Practice, practice, practice

They say practice is key. Don’t attend an interview in ‘comfort mode’ thinking you don’t need any preparation. Rehearse your reply to common interview questions so you feel more comfortable and articulate when meeting the interviewers. Record yourself or get a friend to listen to you while preparing so you can get feedback.

Read the job description

This is possibly a position you will have to master. Read the job description carefully and understand what the scope of the position is. Keep in mind that the interviewer will ask you questions based on this job description.

If you’re applying for a position at a company you already work at, feel free to ask the colleague issuing this job about the position.

Know and sell yourself

You have skills, strengths and key achievements. Make sure to highlight these!

Describe in detail the projects you implemented, your big career wins, your key strengths and anything else proving you’d be a good addition to the hiring team. Take this to a further level and match your experience and achievements to the position you’re applying for.

Stay calm and be confident

No need to panic or be shy. Remain calm and show confidence in what you’ve achieved and what you bring to a team. Maintain eye contact, listen actively, maintain the conversation and make sure your answers are concise, clear and straight to the point.

Overcoming anxiety

It’s normal to have anxiety, especially before an interview. Be prepared, breathe, pace yourself, show your authenticity and believe in yourself. No matter how desperately you want this job, it’s just one opportunity. Show enthusiasm but not desperation.

Project your character and take each interview as a learning experience making you a better job candidate and a savvier professional in the long run.

Think before you speak

There’s no rule saying you have to answer every question immediately. Some interviewers expect you to take a moment before replying as it shows you think well before proposing a way forward. Listen carefully, take your time to think and reply confidently.

Instil positivity

It pays to think positively. Avoid cynicism and bitterness since these qualities can really hurt you in job interviews. Nobody wants to hire a candidate with an attitude problem. Negativity can prevent you from seeing your key selling points clearly and expressing them well in your interview.

Ask questions

An interview is a two-way communication exercise. Take the opportunity to ask questions about the company, the job, the team structure and vision. You are expected to ask questions and show interest in the company!

Be yourself

The most important of all, show the employer who you really are. No bluffing, no pretending and only honesty. Be confident of the unique collection of talents, motivations and skills that make you the individual you are. Do not get discouraged if you are not successful. Do not see yourself as a failure. Your uniqueness and authenticity are what make you so special.
