Birzebbuga St Peters win BOV Challenge Cup
Birzebbuga St Peter’s won the second edition of the BOV Challenge Cup beating Melita 3-0 in the highly anticipated final. The two sides battled it out for the prestigious trophy following an exciting season in the BOV Challenge League.
Fresh from securing promotion to the Premier League for the first time in their history, Birżebbuġa St Peter’s continued their remarkable season by also lifting the BOV Challenge Cup, capping off a truly historic campaign for the club and its supporters.
Birżebbuġa St Peter’s FC delivered a composed and clinical performance to defeat Melita FC 3–0 and lift the BOV Challenge Cup at the National Stadium on Sunday. After an even opening spell, where Melita created early chances, Birżebbuġa took control when Alex Bruno De Souza Silva converted a penalty midway through the first half. Melita pushed hard for an equaliser before the break but were denied by a resilient defence. In the second half, despite sustained pressure from Melita, Birżebbuġa struck decisively on the counter, with Paul Lapira doubling the lead before Zachary Cassar added a fine third shortly after. Birżebbuġa comfortably managed the closing stages to seal an impressive victory, with De Souza Silva’s influential display earning him the BOV Player of the Match award.
The BOV Challenge Cup, established in 2025, forms part of the long standing collaboration between Bank of Valletta and the Malta Football Association, a partnership aimed at supporting football at all levels, promoting fair competition, and encouraging greater participation and engagement in the sport across the country.
At the end of the match, the BOV Challenge Cup trophy was presented by Charles Azzopardi, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility at Bank of Valletta, together with Matthew Paris, Vice President of the Malta Football Association, marking another important milestone in the continued collaboration between the two organisations.
