President and Mrs Vella visit Piggy Bank Campaign Coin Counting

H.E. Dr George Vella, President of Malta and Mrs Vella visited the coin counting process of the L-Istrina Piggy Bank campaign at BOV Centre in Santa Venera, where they were welcomed by Anita Mangion, BOV Director and Charles Azzopardi, Executive PR and Marketing at BOV.

This year’s edition of the L-Istrina BOV Piggy Bank Campaign saw hundreds of cardboard piggy banks distributed to all primary and secondary schools in Malta and Gozo to promote solidarity from a young age and to contribute to the L-Istrina effort. They are then collected from the schools and the thousands and thousands of coins are sorted and counted by BOV and MCCFF volunteers.

‘Although we could not hold some of the events related to the L-Istrina BOV Piggy Bank campaign due to the situation arising from the COVID-19, such as meeting the School Heads and also visiting a number of schools, we are very pleased to see all these donation,’ said His Excellency. ‘The solidarity that the Maltese population is renowned for, came to the fore, as each donation, no matter how small, can make a difference to those who require the services of the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation.’

‘This year we have drastically reduced the carbon footprint of the campaign with the introduction of recyclable cardboard piggy banks instead of the usual plastic ones,’ said BOV Director Anita Mangion. ‘This very laborious phase is however the most satisfying, as each clink of each coin means another contribution towards the sum collected.’

‘This is the 17th consecutive year that we are organising this campaign in collaboration with the Malta Community Chest Fund, and has most probably been one of the most challenging, especially taking care of the health of all those who participate in the campaign,’ continued Ms Mangion. ‘This is one of the campaigns that we look forward to each year, as it brings together school children, their parents, the schools and a number of volunteers and BOV employees who ensure its success.’

Dr and Mrs Vella were shown the whole process of the sorting and counting campaign where Dr Vella took the opportunity to thank the MCCFF volunteers, who continued to support the Foundation throughout this difficult year and the whole Maltese population who has continued to help and donate.

The final sum collected through the L-Istrina BOV Piggy Bank campaign will be presented to H.E. The President during the live broadcast of L-Istrina on the 26th December 2020.
