BOV Tazza l-Kbira turns 89
15 Mar 2023

The BOV Tazza l-Kbira will kick off on Sunday 19th March, 89 years from the first-ever edition, and will see Premier top category horses vying for the most prestigious honour in Malta’s trotting calendar.

Despite its age, the appeal of the BOV Tazza l-Kbira remains as strong as ever, if not stronger, in a race where every effort is made by horse owners and drivers to engrave their name on the coveted trophy.

This is the 61st running of this event and it sees the participation of 74 horses that will be split into 6 heats, from which the first 4 will qualify for the semifinals.  The horses, which include 3 mares, hail from 8 different nations – 43 French, 17 Swedish, 4 Italian, 3 Dutch, 2 Norwegian and 2 Danish among others. 10 horses will be making their first start in Malta, specifically in the BOV Tazza l-Kbira which will see the participation of last year’s winner Charming Soldier, who is also the holder of the best timing in the final and a national record over the 2640m distance.

Semifinals held on the 2nd of April will determine the 12 finalists that will make it to the grand final on Sunday the 16th of April 2023. All races are contested under the traditional 2640m distance, and the horse owners will have the opportunity to draw their horse’s starting number for the final during a press conference held for the occasion.

Bank of Valletta is once again supporting Malta Equidrome in the organisation of the BOV Tazza l-Kbira, the race with the highest prize pot in the local racing calendar, totalling €8250 with the winner receiving €4500. Bank of Valletta is synonymous with sports in Malta and Gozo, supporting excellence through its sponsorship of the highest racing honour of the season.
