BOV 3D Secure...Peace of mind for Online Shopping
When it comes to paying for your internet purchases, your BOV Cards are still the fastest and safest way to secure your purchase. Now, with BOV 3D Secure, your internet shopping has become even more secure.
What is BOV 3D Secure?
The BOV 3D Secure service is offered by Bank of Valletta in collaboration with VISATM and MasterCardTM. BOV 3D Secure adds an additional layer of security when using your BOV Visa and BOV MasterCards for online purchases at merchants who are also enrolled to the service - 'participating merchants'. Added protection is provided by means of a one-time pass code that is used to authorize the transaction, thus safe guarding against the unauthorized use of your cards.
How it works
You will encounter the BOV 3D Secure service when effecting purchases through the internet at online stores who also participate in the 3D Secure programme. Once you have selected the items you wish to purchase, you will be directed to pay for your purchases. If you opt to do so by means of a credit card, a message will appear on screen requesting you to enter your passcode. This passcode will be sent to you by SMS from Bank of Valletta on the mobile phone number that you have registered with the Bank. The transaction will be authenticated within seconds [1] and your purchase is complete. This ensures that only you can make online payments using your card. BOV will send you a new passcode by SMS each time you make an online purchase at a participating merchant, so you do not have to remember yet another passcode. For a step by step explanation please scroll to the 'Lets Go Shopping' section on this page.
Which BOV Cards are linked to the 3D Secure service?
The BOV 3D Secure service is available in connection with all BOV credit and debit cards that are denominated in the Euro currency and bear the 'VISA' or MasterCard' logo. The service is offered free of charge.
How do I recognise participating merchants?
A participating merchant will have any one, or both, of the below logos prominently displayed on their website:
Master Card - BOV
Visa - BOV
How does BOV 3D Secure work?
When you pay for your internet purchases using a BOV debit or credit card through a merchant that supports 3D secure, the following will happen:
  1. As soon as you attempt to make your payment using your BOV card, you will be presented with a message from BOV asking you to enter a passcode.
  2. BOV will send this passcode by SMS to your mobile phone number registered with the Bank.
  3. All you need to do is enter the passcode in the space provided on screen and conclude your purchase.
How do I subscribe to BOV 3D Secure?
If you have registered your mobile number with Bank of Valletta, 3D Secure will be made automatically available in connection with your BOV Visa and BOV MasterCards. If you have not yet provided the Bank with a valid mobile number, you will be able to proceed with one non-3D Secure transaction during which you will be prompted to furnish the Bank with a valid mobile number by contacting the bank’s Customer Service Centre on tel +356 2131 2020. No further transactions on 3D Secure websites will be allowed until a mobile number is provided.
How secure is the one-time passcode?
The passcode that you receive by SMS on the mobile that has been registered with the Bank can be used only for the purchase that you are currently making. When entering the passcode, you are verifying your identity with the Bank and your payment will be approved. [1] BOV will send you a new passcode each time that you purchase from an online merchant that supports 3D Secure - so there’s no need to remember yet another passcode. BOV does not share your passcode with the merchant; therefore, any potential risks to your finances are all the more reduced.
