L-Istrina BOV Piggy Bank Campaign Launched
02 Nov 2022

‘Be a friend, not a bully’

H.E.  George Vella, President of Malta, and Mrs. Vella officially launched the 2022 edition of the L-Istrina BOV Piggy Bank Campaign in the presence of Mr. Kenneth Farrugia, Bank of Valletta Chief Executive Officer, and  Hon. Clifton Grima, Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation.

For the third year running, the Piggy Banks will be made of recyclable cardboard, to reduce the impact on the environment, and three different piggy banks will feature drawings by the winners of a competition organized by the Malta Community Chest Fund for schoolchildren.

Mr. Farrugia commented on the fact that the main aim of the l-Istrina BOV Piggy Bank Campaign is to create awareness about solidarity and to instil the notion that it’s not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving. “This is the 19th consecutive year that this campaign is being held, and since its inception, the funds collected in addition to other generous donations put forward by the Bank amounted to €2.6 million. We are highly proud of the achievements obtained throughout these years, and will keep providing our full support to the MCCFF to create such awareness from a very young age.”

He also highlighted the fact that the funds collected through last year’s initiative amounted to €60,800, exceeding the previous year’s mark for the second year running.

The L-Istrina BOV Piggy Bank campaign requires a lot of effort, both from Bank of Valletta and the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation, specifically related to the organisation of the kids’ drawing competition, the design, and printing of the piggy banks, the distribution in schools, the collection, the sorting and counting of the coins.

His Excellency stated that the BOV Piggy Bank campaign is based on three foundations. The first is the involvement of young children, instilling a sense of altruism and kindness within our future generations. Furthermore, reference was made to the message delivered through this year's BOV Piggy Bank Campaign which is “Be a friend, not a bully”, an important message to retain unity amongst each other. Finally, H.E George Vella recited the prominence of the environmental and social impact that this campaign has by using recyclable materials for the piggy banks and the financial assistance given to the vulnerable people within our society. He concluded by encouraging the public and other organisations to continue assisting the Malta Community Chest Fund throughout the whole year, given the financial challenges being encountered.

Minister Grima stated that the education system looks at the children’s full development and this is done through initiatives such as the BOV Piggy Bank Campaign wherein these young children are contributing to society by giving a small donation and helping those in need.
