31 BOV employees volunteered to donate blood during another blood donation drive organised by Bank of Valletta in collaboration with the National Blood Transfusion Services.
Donated blood is integral to the support of treatment of young children, women who need blood after giving birth and patients who undergo major operations. A bag of donated blood is processed into three products: Red Cell Concentrate, Plasma and Platelets, and can thus help save three lives.
Tony Micallef, Practice Nurse – Donor Liaison for the National Blood Transfusion Service thanked the BOV management and these 31 employees for their generous response to donating blood on a regular basis. “Every year thousands of patients are thankful for the generous act of blood donation. Without these donors, it would be very challenging to save the lives of those in need of blood, as the need for blood transfusions never stops” said Mr Micallef.
Every year, Bank of Valletta hosts several blood donation drives with the aim of helping those in need, creating awareness and encouraging staff members as well as society in general to help save as many lives as possible. “These blood drives always spark a sense of pride in our employees as they perfectly enhance BOV’s vision to act as a socially responsible party in line with our ESG framework,” said Charles Azzopardi, Head of CSR & Communication at Bank of Valletta. “Thanks to the blood drive organisers, the National Blood Transfusion Service and these 31 employees, we have better positioned ourselves to reach UN SDGs such as ‘Good Health and Well-Being’.”
By donating blood, one’s health is not affected and prior to each blood donation, a medical check-up is carried out to determine whether a person is fit enough and eligible to donate blood. Eligible male donors aged from 18 to 65 may donate blood at least once every three months, while females may donate every four months (every 3 months following menopause). Safety measures are in place to adhere to COVID-19 regulations.
